easy homemade dishwasher tablets

07.26.2021

I recently discovered the brand of dishwasher tablets I was using wasn’t actually clean ingredients, even thought I thought I had done my research– but that’s how things go. Plus, they were kind of expensive. Someone I know through instagram posted that she was making her own, and I jumped in her DM’s so fast to figure out how she did it! I didn’t want to post until I had made them, used them, and things I did differently. And with her permission I asked if I could share with you guys the ingredients! They’re all super simple, and listed right below.

Here’s what you need

1 cup of washing soda
1 cup of baking soda
1/4 cup of citric acid
1 cup of kosher salt
1 cup of water
1 tbsp of thieves all purpose cleaner
silicone trays

(You can use a regular ice tray but I ended up cracking all of mine trying to pop the tablets out once they hardened. So I ended up switching to this type of tray and it’s been much easier!)

the girls loved making these, it was like a science experiment and they loved seeing the ingredients bubble

Now to get started

  1. You’ll need a large stainless steel bowl. Mix together the washing soda, baking soda, citric acid and salt.
  2. Add the tspb of thieves to your water and then add to the dry ingredients. The mixture will start to bubble, wait for that to settle down and be less fizzy and then start stirring to combine.
  3. Now start filling the ice trays tightly, and let them sit overnight. (tip: don’t let them sit to long, they’re harder to get out the longer you wait and will break easier)
  4. Once the tablets are dry, remove and store in an airtight container. (it does need to be airtight or the tablets start breaking down)
  5. Now you’re ready to use in your dishwasher

Seriously, so easy, cost effective, and safe clean ingredients! If you don’t have all the ingredients in your house it may seem a little pricey at first but I bought the larger bags of everything so it’ll last a long time. I had the thieves, salt and baking soda already, so it wasn’t really pricy for me. I also think the washing soda can be used in a homemade laundry detergent, which I might try soon. If you make these at home, let me know if you like them or not! I think they work great, if not even better than store bought.

And I’ll add the list of the ingredients again so you don’t have to scroll back up.
